“…carried by the wind” is the title of an exhibition in which the Berlin-based gallery Hilaneh von Kories will present photographs by the Berlin artist Inessa Dolinskaia from November 27, 2015 to February 19, 2016. Whether in Moscow, Florence or especially in Berlin the artist walks the cities with her camera always searching the fleeting moments of city life. Inessa Dolinskaia takes the observer along on a discovery tour beyond the well-known ways of perception. She focusses the perception on generally overlooked details or rearranges the well-known by putting it out of focus of her photographs. Through the lens of her camera she is a meticulous observer who reacts with high sensitivity to the multitudinous impressions of the city. So she creates tranquil images which convey the poetry of everyday life. In this way she is able to stun the observer again and again by presenting unexpected insights and interpretations of urban life. The time of dawn or sometimes dusk are the preferred times of her pictures. For in these moments everything is either calm or the pulse of the city is slowing down again. This specific atmosphere, when time seems to come to a standstill provides ideal conditions for her black-and- white pictures. She pays special attention not only to walls and buildings but also to trees and other plants, which have to cope with the urban environment. People are seldom to be seen in her pictures, but if she puts them into focus they seem to withdraw from the observer, they are alone without resonance, and can only be perceived as shadows or they even seem to disappear into blurring.
With her calm pictures Inessa Dolinskaia produces a limbo which creates a special atmosphere. There are images between movement and standstill, closeness and alienation, detail and survey. In her compositions the city does not seem to be real but rather a dreamlike entity consisting of feelings and yearning. The series of photographs have titles such as „Berlin pastel“, „Geflüster“, „Fiktive Heimat“ or „Wunderland“. This succession of pictures is not documentary but addresses the observer in an emotional way. It is not her intention to explain every picture and thus enable the viewer to understand it, but she varies her use of an irrational visual language of photography. She guides and seduces the observer into fragile sometimes melancholic intermediate worlds of the city. Dream and reality merge in these sensitive visual tales in a unique way. Using the photographic material the artist found her ideal projection surface, here her daydreams receive a special visual form.
The exhibition consisting of about 40 works shows the personal and poetic wonderland of Inessa Dolinskaia. „... I get dressed, open the window. It is important not to wake anyone, otherwise questions will be asked, which cannot be answered. Have you ever taken a walk in Berlin at 5 a.m.? It is wonderful. And because I don‘t want to walk, I fly. I love Berlin in the morning, when everyone is still asleep and the few who hasten to or from work don‘t look up, so most of the time I move in proud loneliness, except for a few sleepy birds. I see rear houses with dusty windows mirroring a different reality. Roofs with numerous aerials, which cast extraterrestrial shadows during the day, but in this morning hour they seem to come from a fairy tale. I love big intersections with still blinking one-eyed traffic lights, where the only pedestrians are pigeons and sparrows. The trees feel unobserved at dawn and whisper to each other. A playground. Dug-up sand, you can still feel yesterday‘s mood. The sun painted on the asphalt smiles at me. I sit on a bench and close my eyes. The bell rings.“ Inessa Dolinskaia was born in Saratov in 1980. Since 2006 she has been working as a freelance photographer. She graduated from „Die Neue Schule für Fotografie“ (Class of 2009). Her first exhibitions were shown in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, and Munich. In 2010 she was awarded the Canon Profifoto Förderpreis.
